First I would like to congratulate Sherry M. for the most improved push up in April. She scaled back and really made some big strides in her form.  This month we are going to shift our focus from the push up to the squat! So many people have GREAT questions about the technicalities of movement, and this is a great way to open up the door for discussion and improvement.

First, let’s just remind ourselves that every body is different. No two squats will look the same unless the people have the exact same lever lengths (arms/legs/torso) and the exact same structure. Clearly that is not a reality! In classes this month we will discuss some important points and get you squatting to the best of your ability. Here are some topics we will focus on:

1) Hip Mobility – stretching out the “crouch” position.

2) Squat width – it can help to widen it out, especially if you have knee issues!

3) Ankle Mobility – it has more to do with squat depth that you would think.

4) Core Function – engage, and goes back to 1 because without the mobility we lack core stability!

5) Upper Body Position – different for everyone – dependent on torso length

squat-72Check to see that weight is in the heels at 90 degrees as shown, if so, drop it lower!

Most of us think we have our squat down, but there is ALWAYS room for improvement. I’m looking forward to making this month a technical month and getting my SQUAT REPS in during May!
