Leah F of the Sunshine Moraga Boot Camp gets the highlight this month. Leah is kind, genuine and true to her heart. She is friendly to every new camper and is very committed to boot camp. Leah’s has a 34 year old son who is an environmental engineer at University of North Carolina and a daughter that is 32 and does public health program evaluation research in S.F.

After running a counseling program for Planned Parenthood in Oakland, Leah then trained as a psychotherapist and had a private practice for 30 years. She co-founded Birthways, a community support center for childbirth and new parenthood based in Oakland. Leah retired in 2005 to travel the globe on her own for a year with periodic visits from her husband. Now she does boot camp, has coffee with her boot camp buddies, gardens, and sings at the bedsides of people at the end of life.

I’d say she’s pretty darn highlight worthy already…but wait… there’s more!

Last summer Leah organized and participated in an eye expedition into the Amazon Jungle in Peru. The Peruvian government is completely unaware of the eye epidemic which is caused by a microscopic worm that lives in the rivers, so Leah fundraised the $30,000 needed to do it. Their team of doctors and do gooders examined eyes and provided glasses; performed eye surgeries in a very basic jungle-town clinic, and and provided diagnosis and treatment for the unfamiliar parasitic disease affecting the eyes, joints and skin. Check out these photos from her adventure.
