When embarking upon new exercise program, the most basic things are often forgotten with all the new information taking space in our brain. During classes I often cue breath to enhance the workout and to make sure you are adequately fueling and relieving your body with oxygen. There are many benefits to using your breath during workouts that go beyond the physical as well. Just as in meditation, we can use the breath to stay focused on the moment, which ensures that we benefit maximally from our workout experience.
Proper breathing technique is unique for each physical movement we do. Sometimes when I cue the breath, people will say “That is the exact opposite of what I have been doing”. There are breath patterns that support the body and aid the muscles of the body in contraction and relaxation so that the proper muscles are focused upon. For example, breathing out during the raising phase of an abdominal crunch or leg raise will help power the movement. As we exhale, the stomach contracts and supports the spine. We inhale during the lowering phase to slow the movement down and allow the diaphragm to relax, which in turn allows more air to enter the lungs.
It takes mindful practice to link proper breathing to movement, so if the breath seems to allude you, don’t worry. In time your body will adjust and you will be ready for the change. In the mean time, slow down your movement and just remember to breathe regardless of when. That alone can be a huge benefit as most of us only use a fraction of our lung capacity even when we exercise.
