A piece from the Gumsaba November Newsletter:

The Gazelle, the Abdominizer, the Bowflex. Nordic Track, Stairmaster, Eliptical. For years we have been made to think we need fancy things to make us healthy and fit. While these fitness crazes may sometimes work, many of these contraptions end up at garage sales with a few layers of dust on them.

Outdoor exercise is a great, no frills way to ease stress and get the body moving. Hiking, biking and jogging and organized outdoor fitness programs help many people commit to their routine. Our connection with nature is innate and was developed by our ancestors long ago as hunter/gatherers. New studies show spending just 5 minutes in nature improves mood, decreases blood pressure, and increases brain recovery. When we move outdoors we respond to the stimulous of changing elevations, we adapt to changes in the ground below our feet and adjust to the natural obstacles nature presents. All of these beneficial stimuli increase our capability to adapt to the challenges of our daily lives.

Here are some habits you can incorporate to get you out of the house.

• You stare at your phone screen and your computer most of the day. Take time off! Commit to walking for 20-30 minutes after dinner with your partner, friend or pet at least 5 times a week.

• Start an exercise journal. Note your feelings before you exercise and your feelings after.

• Keep a food log. Food affects how we feel and if you are lacking motivation you may be able to change that with a simple shift in your diet.

• Get your 6-8 hours. Recent studies show sleep resets the brain which is essential for your health, and lowers your risk of altzimers.

• Turn off the TV at least 1 hour before bed. Read a book instead!

• Trade dessert for a delicious dessert tea.

• Drink water. Most of us don’t drink nearly enough. Aim for ½ your body weight in ounces every day. So, if you weigh 150lbs, drink 75oz througout the day regardless of the outdoor temperature. This flushes and purifys your organs and is great for digestion.

Humans are creatures of habit. While these changes may seem difficult at first, choose to allow yourself the space to be uncomfortable with them! Your mind will lead the way and soon you will have forgotten about that show that used to keep you up until 11. There’s always TIVO, right?

Small changes in your daily habits lead to bigger changes in your life. Start small and what once seemed impossible will be part of your routine.
