Every year on MLK I enjoy reading through his speeches and gleaning a new perspective from his wisdom. I fall in love with him year after year, a man that had no capacity for hate, even with the racism and hate showed to him.  He knew that love was the answer to all of the problems we face. He taught us that even the strongest hate is never as potent or as deep as love.  He truly believed that all people are good natured, he believed that we all had greatness inside of us and inspired generations of people to accept love in their hearts.

We lost this incredible man to ignorance and fear but that does not define his life. His love was so strong that it lives on and inspires us nearly 50 years later. Today, we celebrate a man that gave his life for freedom, for what he knew was right. I am honored to share some of my favorite MLK quotes with you today. May they inspire you toward courage in the face of fear, to love despite hate, to live true to your beliefs and do what is right no matter what.

Rev Martin Luther King

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of “interposition” and “nullification” — one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; “and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
