…peaches for me. It’s stone fruit season, my friends. You know, the kind of fruit with a large pit, or “stone”, in the center? Stone fruit comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from peaches, nectarines, and plums to apricots and cherries. And, just as they are sweet and beautiful, they are great for your health!
Stone fruits are gorgeous with their deep red, purple, orange, pink and yellow coloring, making them rich in plant compounds called phytochemicals. These compounds, more specifically referred to as anthocyanins, procyanidins and flavonols “have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action, which may help protect you from chronic disease”, as Sharon Palmer, RDN, The Plant-Powered Dietitian™, cited in her recent US News article. This is pretty awesome stuff. And since stone fruits are abundant this time of year, you can eat fresh peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, and plums to your heart’s content. They’re a great evening treat and delicious on a big, green salad. So, get on down to your local farmer’s market and treat yourself to Mother Nature’s candy.
