Sounds a little strange, I know, a cold smoothie with oats. But, the oats are the key ingredient that make this smoothie so special! When mixed with frozen fruit and almond milk, the oats soak up the flavors and juices offering a chewiness to compliment a cool, creamy texture. You’ll also find that the added fiber and protein from the oats will help you feel fuller longer. Booyah!

STRAWBERRY AVOCADO BANANA OAT SMOOTHIE

Adapted from Thug Kitchen’s Strawberry Oat Smoothie

Yields ~22 fluid oz. (serves 1 generous portion or 2 small smoothies)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups frozen organic whole strawberries (about 16)
  • 1/2 cup frozen banana (mango will also work)
  • 1/2 fresh avocado
  • 3/4 cup almond milk (soy, coconut, cashew, hemp are also great options)
  • 3/4 cup cold, filtered water
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4-1/2 cup rolled oats (start with 1/4 and see how you feel)
  • 1 Tbsp chia or flax seeds
  • 1 Tbsp. almond butter (optional)
  • 10-14 mint leaves

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Pulse a couple of times, then blend for ~1-2 min. until the consistency is smooth. To thicken, add more oats. To thin out, add more almond milk. For extra oomph, add 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (Organic Vanilla Hemp Protein from Trader Joe’s and Vegan 1 Vanilla are my two faves).
