Though it seems like a no brainer to take care of yourself, many of us simply don’t. Most of us don’t feel a need to take care of ourselves until something goes wrong. If you are feeling an injury coming on ignoring it won’t make it go away. You need to take care of it, its worth the time and effort! You only get one body, right?!
When we talk about myo fascial release in class, we talk about symptoms vs sources. Very often the reason for the the injury (source) is not where you feel the injury (symptom). A good and common example is a tight piriformis (deep gluteal muscle) causing knee pain. Most people will assume the problem is the knee, or the IT band (which you should NOT ROLL) but the source is another muscle! They will spend valuable time rolling the symptom and get temporary relief, but the problem, the source, remains untouched. This means the minute the source muscle is activated you are back at square 1.
Chronic overuse injuries like piriformis syndrome are caused by compensation of the body. Over a long period of time the body will make little adjustments to make daily activities more comfortable. In time, these little compensations add up and cause their own injuries. A daily myofascial release program can be an excellent preventative measure and is a great compliment to any fitness program. Trigger point therapy is used in rehabilitation for a chronic or acute injuries to muscle tissue and it is the method that your Gumsaba coach is certified to teach you.
Many of you have been trained by me, Coach Bri or Coach Allen in self myo fascial release. If you have found that it works for your body then you should invest in a Trigger Point Therapy kit and be consistent with your rehab. As well, seeing a Physical Therapist and learning rehabilitative exercises to strengthen the supportive muscles is worth the time and effort.
I have also taped some quick videos for those of you who i have trained – these are meant to be a reminder/refresher, so if you have not learned the techniques yet you may want to learn them from me before trying to follow the silent video.
Lastly, getting a deep tissue massage from the infamous Peter may be just the thing you need to maintain your alignment. Visit their website and book an appt with Peter for a full body massage or foot reflexology depending on the location of your injury.
