No, I’m not asking if you can touch your toes or wrap your leg around your head. I’m talking about your mind, your mentality. As we go through life we form patterns that become habits. Good or bad, these narrow our field of view, binding us to a certain path, confining us to our way of thinking. When things don’t go our way – whether its showing up to class for a coach we didn’t expect, or having to drop everything to make life “work”, we can choose to be stiff and stuck, or just be flexible. We can gain from the experience if we choose to.

Yesterday I had a full schedule. I went for a run at 5:30, knowing that was the only time I’d have to get it in. Then I drove out to Moraga to teach and from there went straight to my mother in laws to help her take care of some business at the bank. From there, I had just enough time to get to Cyto teach a couple classes. As I was driving home, I had it in my head that I would eat lunch, then take a quick rest before heading out to teach some more.

As I was eating lunch and looking forward to rest, a coach called. Her car had broken down, and she needed coverage. Without hesitation I told her not to consider it done. I finished my last bite and called my 3pm client and asked if we could bump to 3:20, which actually worked better for her.  With 19 minutes to spare I stood up, took a deep breath, an overhead stretch, headed right out the door and back to Cyto to cover the yoga class. I really didn’t have any time to think about being tired or how this was going to effect the rest of my day because that would effect my ability to teach and my clients are the priority. All I could think was how grateful I was that my 3pm client could bump up to 3:20. I just needed those few minutes… and I got em!

After yoga I drove to Lafayette to teach my new self defense program, HIT WITH POWER , to a couple of great young ladies who are headed off to college in mid August. They were awesome, super into the program, and 2 hours later I headed out to Diablo country club. Knowing that the traffic would be bad enough to need the full 40 minutes to get across town I put on some music and took the full 40 minutes to get to my final destination.

After that session I got back in my car and headed home. A sense of gratitude was all I felt. What else was there to feel? Everything worked out, the coach I covered for was home safely, and the classes all went great. My clients were grateful. The situations I encountered today were better for my having been there. That’s my mission. Yes, I was a little tired, but by now its nearly 8pm, and after a day like this, who wouldn’t be!?

What I had “expected” was not what “happened” today. I could have worried and panicked, but I didn’t. Thats not how I practice. I practice taking care of my clients, and handled the situations as they arose while remaining calm. I was flexible and it worked out really well.

Our mental habits make our world. We can choose to get upset at life, to spend our time fretting over little things that make us agitated. On the other hand, we can see the opportunity to learn, to be grateful for what life has presented us. When we play our hand like this, we always win, but more importantly, we learn to focus on solutions rather than problems. This is far less stressful and  far more beneficial for everyone.

I know people who worry about the past and have anxiety about the future. All the while they are missing the goodness that is right here and now. Life is passing them by while they are looking the other way. Life is for living, not stressing out. When things don’t go as planned, be flexible. Maybe this was the way you were meant to go…maybe there is something to gained from going with the flow. Maybe someday you will touch your toes…maybe, just maybe you will wrap your leg around your neck, figuratively speaking, of course.  😂

To your health,
