Imagine a rose bush. What do you see?

There are far fewer roses than there are prickles. The prickles protect the beautiful petals from attacks by bugs and animals lured to the flower by its wonderful scent and color. They serve a purpose so great that without them, the rose may not exist.

Anything that is beautiful, anything worth our effort, our time, will come with a cost. To get to the rose we will suffer some scratches and scars. We can not avoid that. What we can do is learn to appreciate the prickles for the lessons they teach, for the endurance they create, for the will they give us to continue despite the obstacle they present. We can be ready and willing (both literally an figuratively!) to get scratched, and maybe bleed to make our lives really freaking awesome.

Ideally, we are constantly working toward our strongest, most capable and beautiful selves. The prickles we bear are just as worthy of our time and attention as that beautiful rose; they are the foundation on which that rose stands tall. They are the protectors of the work we create, they are the strength that we build to hold our greatest works.

We don’t have to really love something to do it well, but if we decided to try to love it, we could really do some amazing stuff.

Next time you see a rose look deeply at the structure, at the work. You just might see something very familiar.

To your health,

Coach M

These are some of the prickles I will gladly face to be ready for Spartan Beast Montana.
