All things in life have an ebb and flow. We all love the sun, but then it gets so hot we pray for clouds and even rain; we all love a vacation, but would it be so special if we were always on it?

Why is it that some days, we’re super excited to workout, and others we literally have to drag ourselves to do it? I don’t have an exact answer, but I know from experience that you can’t go mock 50 with your hair on fire all the time. Your fitness is a lifelong journey, and IT’S OK to not go as hard as you can all the time!

Ah, sweet rewards!

On days when you don’t feel like working out, or your injury is barking at you, but you know you should or you can, then do the workout. When you do, please don’t punish yourself for not going your hardest, because you will miss the victories that lie in doing what you can, in spite of what you can’t. By the year 2030, experts estimate that nearly 50% of the US population will be 100lbs overweight. This is the result of fad diets that don’t work and lifestyles that don’t require movement. It’s the result of giving in to our lower self. You all are not going down that road, you ALL are the other 50% who move. Be stoked on that! Yes, some days you might move harder than others, and hey, you may fluctuate in your weight (I DO!) but you’re still moving.

As an elite athlete, which I consider many of you, you will have injuries. DO NOT PUNISH YOURSELF. This is all part of the ebb and flow of your fitness and your life. I can’t count the injuries I have had – there have been too many – but what I can count on is the fact that I have trained myself to do what I can in spite of them. Therein lies the victory, when my body says no, my mind says “HEY, I’m the boss!”. The defeat lies in our body saying no and our mind saying oh poor me. Don’t get me wrong, its ok to feel defeated and certainly to take days off, but don’t let it keep you down. Realize that its your life, your choice to be victorious or defeated, no one else’s.

I write this as much for myself as I do for all of you. Even as head coach, there are days like today where I don’t feel like moving. Quite honestly, its coming upon a year of my mom dying, and the last moments I saw her alive were on Mothers Day. These are tough times and any mind and body, and both were trying to get me down today. But no, I put on my shoes, took a good look at myself in the mirror and said, this is not for me, its for her. With tears running down my face I charged up the hills, never looking back. I was rewarded with every step I took, I found my stride and felt love and not anger my heart by the time I reached the top.

Life’s true beauty is found in the entire journey – the good the bad, the laughter and tears, the boring and the crazy. This quote sums it up so well, apply it to yourself, be patient with yourself and appreciate your “bad” days too because they truly make the good days what they are. When asked about what surprised him most about humanity, the Dalai Lama answered “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, then dies having never really lived.

Live it up Campers, we only get one shot at this life – and remember, let your mind lead the way and make the right decision for your body. If its just that you don’t feel like doing it for you, do it for someone you love. If you are injured, do what you can, in spite of what you can’t. And, for crying out loud, if you need rest, take it with pleasure!
