Recovery is a healthy part of any fitness program. Injury prevention, cell regeneration, mental focus…these are just some of the benefits of your recovery day. If you workout hard 5-6 days a week, taking a day off is essential. This does not mean no movement, but it does mean no repetitive movement, heavy lifting, elevation gain hiking or running. So, recovery days can include stretching, myofascial release, long walks, meditation, massage and other means of self care.

First, injury prevention. Our bodies need time to adjust to new loads. It is almost inevitable that you are going to continue to push yourself harder in workouts the more your endurance grows. This is a GREAT thing, but it can be a source of an over use injury if recovery is not considered. That nagging joint pain may just need a few days off to be gone – but then it also needs you to plan a rest day every week so it doesn’t come creeping back.

Cell regeneration happens when we rest. Getting a full nights sleep 6-8 hours, eating nutrient rich foods and drinking plenty of water also helps your cells regenerate. Science has shown that meditation builds brain cells. Not to mention it curbs stress and calms the nervous system.

So, get your sweaty hard workouts in, but also realize that without a rest day, you can actually be losing many of the benefits that your workouts provide.
