Summer blesses us with many gifts, long days, warm nights, and copious hours of sunshine to sweat in! This month at GÜMSABA, we revitalize our training as the sun revitalizes our days. July in California is the perfect backdrop for another level of fitness focus. This month, we re-discover ourselves through our sharp mental attention to our form and function at every workout, in every drill.

We will never reach our full potential unless we get out of our comfort zone; true bliss is earned with sacrifice, hard work and attention to detail. For some of us, it may feel more “comfortable” to speed along and ignore a nagging injury than to focus on form and fix what is hurting us. For others, it may be easier to let our mind wander or talk to a friend instead of listening to and applying the information we are given by our coach. Or maybe you need to reign it in physically to retrain a habit that is not working for you. Maybe you need to reign yourself in mentally to really understand how you work. Or, just maybe, you need to step back, let the chatter in your head settle and soak up the moment for all the wonderful suffering it is. Check your ego, get out of your comfort zone and get to know what is holding you back.

Distractions will always be there, but this moment will only happen once. We dwell on the past and worry about the future when what matters most is slipping away. I promise you this: if you really engage your body AND your mind for the full hour of class, you will discover a new, more wonderful you. And, as this engagement to the moment bleeds past the hour of camp and into your life, you will feel a renewed connection to others and the world around you. This is your blissful spirit, a gift for you that can only be given by you. In times of darkness your blissful spirit will shine from a strong center that you have earned and developed by getting out of your comfort zone and into what really matters…this moment.

So, wherever you are, whatever you are doing be there. Be ALL there, for suffering or for satisfaction, for better for worse. When you slip out of the moment, don’t fret, there is another one opening right NOW for you to slip into. Love yourself, laugh at yourself, be yourself, respect yourself and enjoy your training.
