Think of your warm up and the cool down as injury prevention. Your body needs time mentally and physiologically to prepare for movement and for stillness. At class, we often warm up with bands. Each joint complex in our bodies trades stability for mobility. When we get tight, mainly from seated positions, everything becomes more stable. A proper warm up that heats up the mobile joints while forcing the stable joints to support them. This is critical to creating proper alignment and giving the body an opportunity to perform functionally in any dynamic position. Without a proper warm up, your body will compensate. Most of us sit more than we stand. Expecting your hips, a joint meant for mobility, to perform at “gumsaba” levels without a proper warm up is a bad idea! The joints closest to the hips, the lumbar spine and the knees, are meant for stability and have limited range of motion. Lack of warm up might be the reason why your back or knees are sore!

Cooling down with prolonged stretching will help your body to reset itself after rigorous work. Stretches such as half pigeon pose will help you maintain stability and mobility where they should be happening. When you go back to a seated position, your posture will be more capable of supporting you!

Whether you are working out on your own or coming to class, make the time for a proper warm up and cool down. If you happen to be running late or need to jet early, its best to sacrifice some of the workout to get these parts in because they really do matter most!
